Topic: Worksite Wellness has been designed around incentives to drive participation. But what if we’ve gotten it wrong? Participation and engagement are not the same; engagement is what is critical to long-term success and stems from intrinsic motivation, not incentives. Research shows that incentives and extrinsic rewards at best result in short-term compliance; at worst they weaken intrinsic motivation. Sustainable change and engagement requires a high level of intrinsic motivation and a shift in how people think about themselves and the world around them. It is time to look beyond incentives to shift how people think and increase intrinsic capacity. This session will explore the pitfalls of incentives and extrinsic motivation and present a framework for fostering intrinsic capacity and motivation.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to understand the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and the role incentives play with motivation.
2. Participants will be able to understand the difference between intrinsic, extrinsic, and systemic values and the role each plays in decision-making and motivation.
3. Participants will learn ways to build change efforts in a way that is less reliant on incentives and more aligned with fostering intrinsic capacity and motivation.
